Top Ten Strong Women Chick Flicks

Have you ever wondered about how strong women are seen in movies? They aren't always positive images.

I started thinking about that when Fifty Shades of Grey came out a couple weeks ago. It’s one thing to indulge a fantasy through reading and another to actually see it played out. I’m wondering if the women's image took a hit (pardon the pun). There's been a lot of commentary about Fifty Shades, domestic violence and human trafficking. It's something I hadn't actually thought of until now. For me, the controversy shed a different light on the movie.

However, since March is Women’s History Month, my focus isn't on Ana but on women who are strong and powerful. Because I’m a movie buff, I thought I’d look at other movies and share my personal top ten…and two more to grow on. My full list actually has 40 movies and it's growing. Overall, I think almost anything with Katherine Hepburn or Meryl Streep would qualify. But I wanted my list to be more diverse, so here are my picks (in no particular order).

  1. Dirty Dancing (Baby)
  2. Waiting to Exhale (Glo)
  3. Steel Magnolias (M’Lynn)
  4. Legally Blonde (Elle)
  5. The Color Purple (Celie)
  6. The Sound of Music (Maria)
  7. His Girl Friday (Hildy)
  8. The River Wild (Gail)
  9. Hunger Games (Katniss)
  10. Adam’s Rib (Amanda)
  11. Silkwood (Karen Silkwood)
  12. The Help (Aibileen)

What do you think?

I’ll bet you have your favorites and I hope you’ll share them below!
